Smooth Sixty:
Beebe Open 2006
Back to Back Solid Finishes put Field on notice for 2007 and beyond
MERIDIAN SUN GC, HASLETT, MICHIGAN JUNE 24, 2006
The prematch banter at this year's Beebe Open offered
the team from Okemos a measure of respect along with two slights:
over confidence and inconsistency.
Guilty on all counts.
 |
As far as the up and
down performances, the 2006 pairings guide reminded fans that
this team couldn't string together 2 good years. Finding
our groove in even years has been a struggle.
Confidence has never been a problem for the
team, and while we're not talking about Steve-Garvey-at-a-frat-party cockiness, most folks know that the team from Okemos
doesn't mind reminding the masses that they are contenders.
|
By posting a solid 10 under par 60 at Meridian Sun,
the team put the inconsistent label on the shelf and validated the
boasting of years past. Getting to the 60 was no easy chore: a
hot start with 50 foot eagle putt on #3 (once again, a case of the
Eagle Giggles broke loose) and a nice birdie on #4. After a
rough stretch to close out the first nine, the squad got going again
early on the back and finished with three straight birdies,
including a 30 footer on the 18th, and twenty-three foot bender by
the Captain on #1 - the final hole of the day.
Some shots were definitely left out there, making the
prospects for the 2007 Open very promising. As a feather
in the team's cap, Kelley's blast on 18th earned the long drive
prize - no small feat with line-up of bombers teeing up on Saturday.
Enjoy some of the photos from the course, the bar
(God help that place if we ever win this thing),
and whereabouts unknown:

Gearing up for a 7.5 hour round. Lew and the Captain chill
while K's gets a laugh. The Open is marathon.

We were matched up with
Haslett legends, the Bradleys. That's Diamond Jim, the
Freight Train and the Cool Breeze left to right. |
Tick...Tick....BOOM.
2006 Beebe Open Long Drive Champion lets loose another bomb on
#10. |
Tim
Beebe in the bow aboard the SS Meridian Sun. "CAN YOU
DIG IT?", Beebes queries the pickled mob. (I believe we can) |

Ron, Leaps, Woody hold court in the corner. After taking
the only skin of the day, Woody shared his good fortune with all
the patrons. |
The next day, Team Okie
and Tim Beebe on a wild trip that sent Tattoo plane spotting. |
Team Kleimola didn't show
on the course, but Keith did a little scrambling of his own on
the 19th hole, begging for a 2007 invite. |
