Review: The 2005 Grammy Awards

Inside takes on the show from LA

SALINE, MICHIGAN  FEBRUARY 14, 2005

Here's some takes and review on the E! pre-show and the CBS broadcast of the 47th Annual Grammy awards.

Pre-Show:

Star Jones led the interviews on the E! broadcast and as usual was annoying.  The only reason to watch the show is comedienne Kathy Griffin.  Her irreverence is perfect for these award shows.  About half of the pretentious artists are clearly uncomfortable around her- it makes for great television.  The new band "The Killers" didn't know what they walked into when she started in with her questions.

Here are some classic comments/questions to the stars served up by Griffin:

- To Lisa Marie Presley: "Can I have $20?"

- To John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin:  "Who rolls a better blunt, Snoop Dogg or Willie Nelson?"

- To Kanye West: "Who is hotter, [Josh] Groban or [Michael] Bolton?"

Show:

- The opener was ok, although I'm starting to feel like the Black Eyed Peas are being jammed down our throats.

- There was a lot of fanfare for the performance by Jennifer Lopez and Mark Anthony.  Ok, they sang a song in Spanish inside a big bedroom set.  Awful.  Why are they wasting our time with a Spanish song?

- Green Day's performance was solid and their new album is strong.  They've come a long way from hurling mud and poop at Woodstock 1994.

- The southern church segment with West and the Blind Boys of Alabama was well done.  Right after, West won his Grammy and revealed that he's a pretty strange cat.

- Not surprising at all, Ray Charles posthumously won album of the year and seven other awards for his Genius Loves Company album.  Once again these award shows fall over themselves trying to honor aging/dying/hard luck stars.

- While some might argue that Loretta Lynn's award qualifies as a sympathy vote, her country album produced by White Stripe frontman and Detroiter Jack White is very good.  But watching her boss White around when they accepted Country Album of the Year was classic.  Lynn would bark out some order like, "Say something Jack", and White would pause and respond, "Yes M'am".

- Where was the Grammy nomination for Will Ferrell signing 'Afternoon Delight' from the movie, "The Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy"???
