Breakdown of Pacers/Pistons Brawl 2004

Artest shoulders the blame for this mess

SALINE, MICHIGAN  NOVEMBER 20, 2004

Many in the media have already pointed the finger at the Pistons fans for the mess at the Palace on Friday night.  Here's my take on the fight, and on the Detroit fans behavior:

- Detroit fans should be scolded for throwing cups, chairs, ice, etc., at the players.  But it is not unprecedented for fans to throw things at players or on the court.

- Ron Artest is to blame here.  After being peppered with a cup while resting on the scorers table, Artest took off into the crowd.  Had Artest not reacted and gone into the crowd, there would have been no incident.

- Once a player goes into the crowd, how can you blame others in the crowd for reacting?  The players were coming after the fans, how would you react?

-  There were a couple comical moments in the footage.  Watching the face of the guy that Artest went after first was priceless.  First he was screaming at Artest, practically laughing even as the Pacer nutcase was heading toward him.  Then he realized that he was the target of Artest's charge and his attitude changed, especially when Artest's big paw was wrapped around his head.

- You have to like the fat kid who was on the court.  He kind of just wandered out there during the melee.  I don't know if he said something, but Artest took two shots at him and he stood in there.
