'The Apprentice' Season Two: Unpaid Leave!

The Apprentice sucks?

Katie's back and she's taking on Donald Trump

By Katie Armstrong

DETROIT, MICHIGAN SEPTEMBER 24, 2004

I’m not going to fire season two yet, but I am getting very, very close. Is it me who has changed? Or is it that season two is just a hollow attempt to capitalize on prior success? Last season was pure beauty- well except for that unfortunate live last episode. Watching winner Bill Rancic’s eyes follow along with Donald Trump’s cue cards was painful.

And now I would like to lay out a few of my major complaints on the new season of The Apprentice:

  • Generic ‘reality TV’ feel- Last year the The Apprentice seemed fresh.  There were actually opportunities to use your brain while watching television. Now it seems to be a garbled showcase of obnoxious fools chosen to get under our skin.  Sam and Omarosa were such a hit- let's load up on the freaks! And please, why the immunity?  Will season three have tiki torches? A rose ceremony?

  • Excessive product tie-ins- Now, I realize that product tie-ins are inescapable.  But an entire hour program devoted to a new product roll out? Come on! And, let’s not forgot the Proctor and Gamble folks (the same ones from the show!) inviting viewers to log on to their website for a chance to do better than the real contestants.  They should be paying me to watch.

  • The firing of Bradford- Why would Donald Trump fire Bradford? Why?  Perhaps to create his own (Crest Vanilla Mint) buzz? I think it’s pretty rare to get fired for being capable and confident in job well done.  I am less than familiar with corporate policy on immunity forfeit.  It all makes me wonder if Trump is really looking for the best employee, or a cheap way to promote himself.  Will Bradford be back!?

  • The method of Stacy J’s dismissal- Alright, alright, the woman is disturbed.  But did we really need the whole team to rally together for round robin character assassination?  I particularly loved how she proved she was not crazy, “Crazy people blow up buildings and don’t pay their taxes. I pay my taxes.”

I think all the criticisms can be boiled down to: Trump knows he’s got something here in The Apprentice and will do whatever it takes to milk it. And I mean whatever. I can only imagine what is in store.
