Todd Martin Retires

US Tennis legend plays final match

NEW YORK, NEW YORK AUGUST 30, 2004

One of the modern legends of USA Tennis, Todd Martin, played what looks to be his final competitive match late Monday night.  It was kind of a sad scene - Martin dropping his match in front of a sparse first round crowd at the Open, with his wife Amy and their baby looking on.

The umpire then announced to the few on hand that Martin was packing it in.  Martin's legacy will be 8 singles titles, and a good deal of success in the majors, including 2 Wimbledon semi-finals and a US Open and Australian Open final.  His highest ranking was #4 in the world.  It is hoped that TM stays involved in tennis; he is one of the most respected players on the tour.
