How about a Mint Julep, Charlsie?

SALINE, MICHIGAN  APRIL 30, 2004

What's the most popular and favorite drink at the Kentucky Derby and Churchill Downs?  Well, it's the Mint Julep of course.   People like their Mint Julip's a variety of different ways, but here is one popular recipe for your Mint Julep.  Don't knock it until you drink one:

Ingredients:

2 cups sugar

2 cups water

Sprigs of fresh mint

Crushed ice

Kentucky Bourbon

Mix the sugar and mint on a plate (or in a bag) and bruise the mint with the back of a spoon.  Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then strain and refrigerate the syrup overnight.

Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Bourbon. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.
