NFL playoffs. Thirty seconds to go in
the game. First down. One timeout left. On your
opponents 15 yard line. Down three points. What do you do?
St. Louis Rams coach Mike Martz did the
wrong thing. He let the clock run down to three seconds, called a
timeout, and then kicked the field goal to tie the game and send it to
overtime. The Rams lost in the extra period to the Carolina Panthers
on a long TD pass.
Martz should have run at least one more play
to try to get a touchdown and win the game. I'd
have run at least one pass to the end zone and maybe a delayed draw to
Faulk. You still have the timeout and a down to spike the ball to
stop the clock. If I were running the team, I would run a play even
with no timeouts. Martz deserves all the criticism that I believe is
coming his way this week.
UPDATE: Reaction to this take from
"Rams insider" K. Wilhelm:
I was at the game and
couldn't believe it. The place went wild once the
got the 1st down at the 15 and then went into shock when Martz didn't take
at least one chance at the end zone. I didn't see this, but my
neighbor,
who sits right behind the rams bench, said that during the 38 seconds and
the subsequent overtime, Faulk, Bruce and Holt all seemed to be
"petitioning" to Martz to take the gloves off and open it up, but Martz
just
kept walking way from them. If I were the owner I would seriously be
thinking about a coaching change....the Rams organization (although they
finished 12-4) is at a crossroads. Half the team seems to support Bulger
and the other half is backing Warner, while no one is sure what Martz is
thinking.
Martz is getting
pounded in the local media...and I agree he
deserves it. How can he ask his guys to go to war for him every
week, when
they now know that when the going gets tough he'll play not to lose
instead
of to win?
