Each
summer we head to the shore at Long Beach Island (L.B.I), New Jersey for
vacation. One of the highlights each year is when the fellers go
crabbing in the Bay that
separates L.B.I from mainland New Jersey (the ladies typically have more
important things to attend to). Although feasting
on crabs is always nice, the best part always comes from the catching them
in the bay.
There
have been some classic moments during our crabbing trips, and here are some:
--After
one of our traps became untied and lost in the water, my dad takes out a pair of
pliers, fastens them to the end of a line and tosses the pliers in the water.
On about the 4th attempt, somehow the pliers hook onto the missing crab
trap and it is raised out of the depths into the boat. The kicker:
within the trap were 2 unsuspecting crabs (keepers).
--Having
Andrew Rosenstein join us. Rosey caught on very fast and soon mastered the
craft. This despite referring to the sea gulls floating near our boat as
"ducks".
--Last
year we are sitting in our boat and see a large object floating toward us in the
channel. As it creeps closer we notice that it is a teakwood bench that we
figure had blown off someone's dock during a storm. We promptly declare
salvage rights and hoist the bench into our boat. The bench currently sits
on our back porch in Michigan.
--One
year we take out 2 boats into the Bay on a very windy day. One after the
other, the engines in each boat break down. The wind takes over and
eventually we all end up stranded on a muddy island a few hundred yards from the
marina. The crew from the marina had to respond to our emergency whistles
and come get us out of there.
--Up
until recently we always rented boats from a place called Margo's. After
years upon years of poor service, we decided to take our business to Margo's
competitor in the Bay, Causeway Rentals. Our experience at the new boat
shop prompted dad to write a legendary note to the management at Margo's.
