Big Swinger loses his Club

Hope fades as desperate search comes up empty

HALE, MI.  May 26-28, 2001.  Friends and family of Jessica Kemp gathered at her family cottage this weekend in Hale, MI, a few miles from East Tawas. One of the highlights of the visit, as usual, was repeatedly pounding golf balls off the 250 ft. cliff (on which the cottage sits) into the mouth of the Au Sable river (see picture above).  Between Greg, cousin Joe, Todd (the Bod) and Kelley (Kays) Kuehne, we peppered several dozens of balls into the drink.

The fun soon turned to dismay when Kays reared back with his trusty 5 iron on Sunday afternoon.  At impact, a large, unfamiliar sound echoed over the valley.  Suddenly onlookers realized that accompanying Kay's ball on the descent into the river was his club head.  Kays sat there with pixie stick in hand trying to get a line on where it would land hoping for a recovery.  A few seconds later, as it splashed about 10 feet from shore, most of the witnesses were relieved.

Then Joe stepped in and advised, "That thing is gone."  Kays and Greg questioned Joe's confident statement by asking, "How so?  It landed just off of the shore."

Joe explained, "You see, there is twenty foot drop off right from the coast.  You'll never find it."  A nervous silence ensued.

Jessica's cousins continued to search for the club under the inspiration of a $20 reward from Kays, but to no avail to date.  Cousin Billy may strap on the frogman suit to make things a little interesting.  Be sure to check back in for updates.
