Ozzy the Silly Clown

Celebrities who have become laughingstocks

ANN ARBOR, MI JANUARY 12, 2003

At what point did Ozzy Osbourne turn from a rock artist to a clown?  I've seen him recently portrayed in spots for the American Music Awards: he is acting confused, slurring his speech and lacing each sentence with F-bombs.

I don't doubt that much of Ozzy's act is the real deal; years ago I used to hear him on Stern and he acted the same way.  And don't get me wrong, his MTV show is great.

I guess what troubles me is that Ozzy now probably has to do his 'I'm a confused idiot" act on command.  Can you not picture a producer egging him on as in, "Come on Ozzy, I need you to look bewildered and start swearing like you do..that's a good monkey"??  At some point Ozzy lost his credibility as a heavy metal pioneer.  He is now the silly man who makes us laugh.

Other celebrities who were once respected in their profession but now are clowns:

- Terry Bradshaw.  He ran the offense of an NFL dynasty, earning four Super Bowl rings with the Steelers.  Now he plays the fool on the Fox NFL show and performs a similar act in his dreadful commercials.  Terry's motto: "Hey everybody, look at me...I'm a complete jackass".  Many argue that this also goes for Terry's partner, Howie Long.

- Lee Corso.  I don't remember when Corso was a coach, but I know he held some somewhat high-profile coaching positions including Indiana.  Now Corso is the court jester on ESPN's College Football Show.  Corso's signature move is donning the head of a team's mascot - this is to indicate the team he thinks will win the game.  Not only is he often wrong, but he also looks like an ass.  I don't know what causes a grown man to act this way.

- Dick Vitale.  Like Corso, Vitale was a high-profile college coach and even coached in the NBA for the Detroit Pistons.  Now Vitale is the guy who yells out his little catch phrases during broadcasts.  It is tough to take him seriously.

- Steven Baldwin.  Shesh - this guy sucks.  Maybe he was never a respected actor, but wasn't he pretty cool in The Usual Suspects?

It is tough to go the other way: from Clown to respected artist.  I think you can make a case for Jon Bon Jovi.  There was a point when big-hair heavy metal rockers like Bon Jovi became a complete joke.  Today, Jon & co. rock the house.
