M Wrestlers Roll Spartans

North Dakota County Champ in the House

ANN ARBOR, FEB 24, 2002

Have you ever seen a cat play with a wounded mouse? Scott (Mudbowl) Muldrow and I did during the Michigan vs. Michigan State Wrestling match on Sunday,   Michigan, ranked #2 in the country, dominated the entire match and won 29-7. The 21st ranked Spartans just couldn't hang with the Blue.

Often times the Michigan Wolverine wrestlers could be seen taking down their opponent for 2 points, allowing them to get back up and thus losing 1 point, only to slam them down again to score another 2 points.  For the record, the last time the Michigan State Spartans played with M mice was the last 10 times they have met on the basketball court. Hmm.

Anyway, during the meet we learned that Scotty Mudbowl is no stranger to the wrestling mat. Before moving onto other pursuits he wrestled for his high school in North Dakota. He even took the county title in the 132 lb weight class.  That's right, one hundred thirty two. His nickname on the mat was "The Eency Weency Spider".

Here is a photo (compliments of the Grand Forks High School records dept.) of Scott in action versus Johnny "Grape nuts" Wilson of Fargo High (click to enlarge):

More on the meet can be found here.

UPDATE:  Michigan's wrestling team has been very tough in 2004, with wins over Iowa and Minnesota, Michigan is suddenly one of the top ranked teams in the country.
