Foursome
scrambles for Par at Tom Izzo Classic
Quartet
battles damp fairways and light snow

Tough
conditions were met head on by the foursome of
John Welter, Ron Dooley, Greg Dooley and Ron
Dooley II at the Tom Izzo golf outing at the
Country Club of Lansing. After a birdie on
an early hole, the group scrambled for par on the
rest of the course except for a late three-putt
bogie on the 17th hole we played - the par 3
7th. We made a shaky par on the final hole
to finish even for the day.

At one point snow was actually coming down.
Coach Izzo, born and raised in the Upper Peninsula of
Michigan, said it was the coldest conditions in which he
has ever golfed. He added that where he comes from
"there are 11 months of winter and 1 month of poor
sledding." Fortunately some of the guys in our
group still have our 'winter coats' to keep
them warm (I'm not talking about our jackets).
Elsewhere,
the webmaster drilled a 50 foot gimmick "Vegas
style" putt to win a free golf weekend up at
Crystal Mountain resort. Shortly after making the
putt I was advised that someone else had also made it,
resulting in a 1 putt winner-take-all playoff. So,
after our scramble round we headed back to the putting
green. My competitor went first and rolled his putt about 20 feet short of
the pin. So, in the fashion of other Dooley
champions (Dad,
Ron),
I calmly rolled the putt down the green with my Nubbins
putter and took the title.
Coach Izzo presented me with the prize at the reception
afterwards.
The
outing benefited Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.
