Exclusive:  Winnipeg Man Proves Don Cherry Is Correct!

Research Report Reveals Grapes Statements on French accurate

DETROIT, MICHIGAN  FEBRUARY 10, 2004
The Grapevine Online has obtained a fascinating thirty-one page report titled "Was the CBC Justified in Censuring Don Cherry?" from a man identified simply as "Curt from the 'Peg".  The document essentially proves that Don Cherry's statements made on the January 24, 2004 edition of Coach's Corner were correct.  Cherry, who often goes by Grapes, stated that most players that wear visors (or masks) in the NHL are "Europeans and French guys".  This has led to an investigation by the Canadian government and the decision to put Coach's Corner on a seven-second delay to allow statements deemed inappropriate to be censored.

Here is a summary of his findings:

  • 35% of the players in the NHL wear visors;

  • North Americans make up 61% of the NHL and represent 35% of the players who wear visors;

  • "Europeans and French guys" make up 39% of the NHL and wear 65% of the visors;

  • 20% of the North Americans that play in the NHL wear a visor;

  • 55% of the "French guys" who play in the NHL wear a visor; and

  • 59% of the Europeans that play in the NHL wear a visor.

Yes folks, Curt went through the entire roster of each NHL team, classified each player, determined whether the player wears a visor.  Incredible work.

Still interested?  Curt gave the Grapevine Online permission to publish the complete letter that summarize his findings and describes how he built his model.  Check out the data: FULL STORY

Grapes Under Investigation!  What happened to Free Speech?

 DETROIT, MICHIGAN  FEBRUARY 5, 2004

Here we go again!  Don Cherry is under investigation by the Canadian "official languages commissioner" (whatever the hell that means!) for his comments on the January 24, 2004 installment of Coach's Corner on CBC!  This rings surprising similar to Grapes' comments on the March 22, 2003 show where he railed against the Canadian government for its lack of support for the Coalition War in Iraq.

A group made the compliant accusing Grapes of "anti-French" comments.  The groups name, and I'm serious, is called "Canadian Parents for French".  Losers.

Apparently someone was offended by his characterization of NHL players that wear visors (or protective masks) as "Europeans and French guys".   And tough guys don't wear them (like Domi).  He went to add that he always knew that mandatory requirements for protective gear were coming for the NHL.

Our Comments:  Are you kidding me?  What has this world come to?  Come on, you know this stuff drives you crazy.   Here is a link to the January 24, 2004 show.  See below from YOUR emails and letters after the March 22 show.

Below you can find  a recap of the events surrounding the March 22, 2003 Hockey Night in Canada telecast where Don Cherry chastised the Canadian government for not supporting the United State overseas:

-----------------------------------------------

April 4, 2003.  The emails keep pouring in.  Click here or page down to read some of the notes.

The Grapevine was stunned to learn that CBC pulled the video link from the March 22nd show from its Coach's Corner website.   But a savvy fella knows that the video is still there, just click here to view the video from March 22 (you may need a "RealOne player").

In an April 2nd release, the executive Vice President of CBC referred to Grapes comments (on the March 22 Coach's Corner and his 3/31 appearance on the Jim Rome show) as  "uninformed" and "inappropriate".

So now the government-owned network decides what opinions are properly "informed" and "appropriate"??  Are you serious?

The CBC said that disciplinary action would not be taken against Cherry because he had made these comments on a radio show not associated with the network. However, Cherry will not be allowed to express similar opinions on Hockey Night in Canada's, Coach's Corner.   CENSORSHIP!  Listen CBC - you will NOT shut down the Grapevine.

And get this, the story says "Thousands of viewers wrote emails to the CBC and hundreds more called to complain about the content of Coach's Corner"  Is this fair reporting?  Please see the notes we've received below and judge for yourself.

"We have made it clear to both Don and Ron that Coach's Corner is not an appropriate place to air opinions about the Iraq War".

Here is a link to the entire story.  Here are more related stories:

On March 31st, Grapes was a guest on the Jim Rome show, rehashing his comments from the March 22 Coach's Corner show where he chastised the Canadian government's lack of support for the Coalition in Iraq.  Here are a couple quotes from the show:

"You have to realize the CBC is government owned," Cherry said on Rome's program, which is broadcast across the U.S. and Canada.

"You have to say the government was against it (the war) and I'm for it and I'm on a government program."

The letters to the Grapevine keep pouring in (see below).

-------------------------------------------------

It was back to hockey on the March 28, 2003 version of Coach's Corner.  Grapes commented upon the Red Wings/Blues brawl that took place earlier in the day.  Nothing like a good hockey fight to get Grapes back focused on the ice? We join Grapes in hoping that these two teams meet up again in the playoffs.

---------------------------------------------------

Coach's Corner on March 22, 2003 was one for the ages.  Grapes led off with a statement backing the USA and added a harsh condemnation of the Canadian government for their lack of support for the Allied forces in Iraq.

It soon turned into a heated debate with co-host Ron MacLean.  This conversation has touched off a firestorm all over North America and has spilled over onto the Grapevine.

A few of the responses are found below.  We'd like to hear your comments.  Please include name and town.

Here are some epic comments we've received:

US Military Man offers his Thanks

TUCSON, AZ   APRIL 12, 2003

As a member of the US military, I say "thank you Don Cherry".  It's good to know there's people
outside the US (and Hollywood) that believe lives aren't being sacrificed in vain, but for a noble
and righteous cause.  I sent a specific thank you to Grapes via the CBC HNIC contact email.....but I suppose it's sitting in the system administrator's "trash" box.

Why Pull a Balanced Debate??  Shame on CBC!

EDMONTON, ALBERTA, APRIL 11, 2003

(Email sent to CBC:)

Where's Don's pro-war, Ron's anti-war rant? Don't tell me the Great Champions of Free Speech have adopted the American model of "Free Speech as long as you don't say too much."  If so, you are a bunch of cowards and cretins. This may come as a surprise to you elitist honchos -- as it once did for Peter Mansbridge -- who think hockey is a Joe Lunchpail pursuit, but HNIC pays the CBC's way and nothing pays more than the Coach's Corner segment. Ordinary Canadians, east and west, rich and poor, French and English love Don. Why? Because he IS outspoken and opinionated. Why would you drop the March 22 segment? If nothing else, it was balanced with Ron providing the con to Don's pro. Shame on you. No wonder the CBC is becoming increasingly irrelevant in the Canadian TV scene. If you screw up -- this time with hockey,  specifically Coach's Corner -- as you did by moving the news to 10 o' clock, kiss your cushy job goodbye. Again, shame on you.

Yukon Man: Ottawa is Failing

WHITEHORSE, YUKON, APRIL 5, 2003

Don
Being a person that has spent 5 and a 1/2 years outside of this country
during the cold war in the name of peace and freedom. I agree with you the
men of Flanders Fields passed the torch to us and Ottawa is failing them.
The price of freedom is high, these decisions are coming from people that
have never been in harms way. Ottawa needs to thank a lot of Canadian
Veterans for the  freedom they enjoy, to be safe at home doing nothing to
help. The sad part is the rest of us will pay for this in some way.

Grapes Has A Pair

CANADA, APRIL 4, 2003

Kudos for Grapes for taking a stance on the war on Iraq and expressing the views of many Canadians, too bad there aren't more people with enough balls out there to really say what they think.

Don't Mess With Texas

MIDLAND, TEXAS, APRIL 4, 2003

I just wanted to say "Thank You" for standing up for the U.S., when others
in the world would not. I read about your discussion with Mr. MacLean about
the war with Iraq and how you stood up for us down here. I understand and
agree that everyone should have their opinion, which is exactly what
disturbs me, when I find out that CBC removed your discussion from it's
archives. Talking about censorship!!!

Who knows, maybe we can get you a better job here in the states. Americans
can only dream of receiving someone as patriotic as yourself.

Sincerely,
Jack Campbell

Don't Wait for the Smoking Gun

DETROIT, MICHIGAN, APRIL 4, 2003

As an American who had a relative die in the World Trade Center, my stance is one of not
wanting to wait for the smoking gun to take action.  If the gun is smoking,
that means it has already been fired!   The Islamists already hate us and
would try to kill more innocents no matter what was going on.   They will
NEVER be brought over the side of freedom and justice, but rather want to
perpetuate a system of repression and hatred.

CBC must have been squirming

CANADA, APRIL 2, 2003

Way to go Don!  You nailed it right on! (about our gutless-coward of a Prime Minister for not supporting our troops and USA in Iraq). I would bet those CBC bastards were really squirming, hey!

Government is destroying our British Heritage

CANADA, APRIL 2, 2003

I totally agree with the comments made by Don Cherry regarding our Federal Government's lack of support for our American neighbors. I believe, as many do,  that it has to do a lot more with supporting the stand taken by France than that of Britain.   Just another attempt by our government to do whatever they can to destroy what's left of our British heritage.

One only has to recall statements made by some of our Federal politicians to realize that the party that now rules our country is filled with people who are anti-American.

I'm proud to live in a country where people can find fault with the policies of our government and not end up in front of a firing squad.   I just hope the CBC and the government it supports do not "fire" Don Cherry for speaking on behalf of what I believe to be the silent majority.

Grapes should Stick to Hockey

THING, OF COURSE.  I'M ALMOST YOUR AGE.

REMEMBER LAST YEAR AT THE OLYMPICS, WHEN

THE U. S. WOMEN THREW OUR FLAGON THE FLOOR?

PLEASE, DON'T FORGET TO MENTION THAT.  TWO

WRONGS DON'T MAKE A RIGHT, BUT THESE THINGS

DO HAPPEN.

I DO AGREE WITH YOU ON YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT

CANADA BACKING THE U. S. BUT THAT IS NOT

Don't Generalize French Speaking Canadians!

PETAWAWA, ONTARIO, APRIL 1, 2003

Don:

I do support your comments concerning the Iraq war.  Canada should of had join the US and British.  These guys are not a bunch of chicken shit.

I am a French Canadian.  I still do support the war and effort to remove Saddam from power.  The only thing Don, please don't generalize the French Speaking Canadians with Quebecer's.  We are not all from Quebec.

On that Don, your show remains the best.

I wish you all the best.

Get Over it Canada

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA  APRIL 1, 2003

Grapes,

Take no prisoners Don. You do speak for the silent majority in a PC world that is so myopic it is truly embarrassing. Get over it Canada. There is a great big world out there to discover.

Keep your stick on the ice,

Timothy Crowley

We must stick together

DETROIT MI, APRIL 1, 2003

Was glad to hear Don telling it like he sees it about the war, and Canada's lack of support. I'm from the Detroit area, I wonder if the terrorists blew up the bridge or tunnel or worse, blew up the fermi plant, and the radiation floated across Canada if that would get their attention.

I surely don't agree a lot with Bush, but am 100% in support of the troops and what they are doing. If we all (UN Nations) don't stick together, the day will come that we will all be sorry. Maybe your prime minister will call on France for help when Canada needs it.

Brockville drops F-bomb for Grapes

BROCKVILLE, ON, MARCH 31, 2003

I loved what you said on the CBC regarding our gutless witless P.M.  Fu*k these left wing liberal historian revisionists.  I heard a left wing pointy header say the other day that most Canadians are pacifists!!  Obviously they have never seen an OHA or NHL hockey game.  A proud Canadian sickened by this government.

Doug Snider

P.S. I've heard that a hockey game is not the appropriate venue for politics. Where then are we (English Canada) to hear our side?  On the Communist Broadcasting network???  Don't listen to 'em Grapes, give 'em hell.

Grapes has Guts

CANADA, MARCH 31, 2003

Thank you Don for having the guts to stand up for what you and so many of us
believe in. Canada needs more people like yourself to speak out against the
anti-Americanism so rampant in Ottawa. Many people are afraid to have their
views heard, afraid to be labeled a knuckle dragging redneck or worse.

I attended my fist ever rally this weekend, in support of the allied
liberation of Iraq. Most people there had never attended such an event
before, much different from the career protesters found in so many of today's
socialist movements.

I just wanted to write you to show my support. You bring hope, that the
Canada so many have died for in the past, is still alive. Keep fighting.

Sincerely,
Dan Heinzlmeir

Keep Up the Onslaught, Grapes

SOMEWHERE IN CANADA, MARCH 31, 2003

Grapes

We love you ! You stated on "Hockey night in Canada" and later on the "Jim Rome" show what many of us feel about this countries lack of support for the U.S. in these trying times. Your comments about the fans in Montreal booing the U.S. National Anthem were also right on.

Keep up the onslaught. Most of us are sick of this Prime Minister and his group of "gofors" and want to see him out on his ass, back in Quebec, never to be seen, never to be heard from again !

A True Canadian and Proud of it

Max

We are with you, Grapes!

SASKATCHEWAN, MARCH 30, 2003

Don Cherry,

We need people like you who are not afraid to voice their opinion. We are indeed behind the U.S.A. war on Iraq, I just wish our Prime Minister could see the damage he's DOING BY NOT HELPING OUT!!!   Saddam cares only for himself, and he will stop at nothing...even using his own people as shields.  What happened in New York can happen in Canada if he is not stopped. Terrorism must be stopped and I'm so proud of those American Troops who will fight for Peace on Earth. I just pray that Chretian & his supporters wake up....my gosh  Saddam is paying  any suicide bomber 35,0000 dollars to give to his family after he's killed  the U.S. soldiers...does that make sense!!!!  Chretian has made us look like cowards. So if people give you a hard time ....YELL LOUDER  on TV. and remember how many people are standing with you.....

God Bless you always,

Mrs. Diane Lenouail

Grapes Welcome in Motown

Another defection for the Wings?
DETROIT, MI  MARCH 29, 2003

Hello Don,
I am proud that you have the guts to call it the way you see it. Don't
listen to those CBC executives that are not happy with your comments, they
are a bunch of lolly pops!!
I am from Detroit and have been a fan from way back. A lot of people admire
you for telling it like it is!!
If they don't appreciate you in CANADA you would be more than welcome to
move Coach's Corner to Detroit with the RED WINGS!! You have many fans here
as the CBC is a local channel, matter of fact the only reason we watch CBC
is for Hockey Night in Canada and of course to see Coach's Corner.
Keep up the good work and don't change a thing, KEEP CALLING IT LIKE YOU SEE
IT!

BEST REGARDS,
Tom Arsenault

Quebec Cowards

US Navy Vet writes open letter of support
OAKLAND, CA  MARCH 27, 2003

Don Cherry,
I want to thank you for what you said on Hockey Night in Canada, I am a vet from the United States Navy 1963 to 1966 and I was always proud of being a Canadian one that served during that conflict. Today I hang my head in shame that we have a country of thirty six million people ruled by a province of 7 million Quebecers, obviously the tail is wagging the dog. What truly makes me sick is that 29 million have no guts because they hide behind these bastards. Why did we allow so many Canadians to die to help France get its freedom in WW2?  We should have given it to the Germans. And your partner in Hockey night in Canada should move to Quebec. There are no words in English or French that explain Canada's position except Cowards, we ought to hide our faces for all of eternity.

A sick and embarrassed Canadian

3 Cheers For Grapes!

Grapes' hometown joins the commentary
KINGSTON, ONTARIO  MARCH 22, 2003

Soon after Don Cherry's recent rant on HNIC's Coach's Corner, many viewers and readers of gd.com chimed in. This gem is short and sweet, and couldn't get published quick enough:

Canuck Chatises Cherry

Maple Leaf-centric HNIC irks another
VANCOUVER, BC  FEBRUARY 27, 2003

I just have to tell you that somebody at HNIC should remind [co-host Ron] McLean [sic] and Cherry there are 6 Canadian teams in the NHL – not just Toronto.  I have watched them for many, many years and even taped them when I can’t watch live but this year I am kind of fed up with the content only ever being about Toronto and Doug Gilmour in Montreal.  At least McLean includes a representative from the West (along with 3 from the East) during “Hot Stove” so I will give some credit there.

Cherry NEVER mentions the Canucks unless McLean does and they don’t speak that much about Ottawa either unless it is about the financial stuff.  These are top teams this year and should get some credit from Hockey Night in Canada. It is quite boring to the rest of Canada to hear nothing from Cherry but stuff about Toronto players (Domi, Carson & Roberts).

I know he doesn’t appreciate Russian or Swedish players so if he can’t bring himself to talk about anybody other than Canadian players please tell him to look past Toronto, we have Canadians in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver- and two of them have been on the top scoring line for a year now even though one of them is Swedish [Markus Naslund].  All [Naslund] does is hold the scoring title at the moment for goals and is tied for the most points and has by far the best wrist shot in the NHL.  Come West Young Men!!!!

The Wrath of Grapes

Cherry's bows in HNIC opener explained

SALINE, MICHIGAN  JUNE 21, 2002

During the opening clip of Don (Grapes) Cherry's intermission show, Coach's Corner, there is a clip of Grapes behind the bench seemingly acknowledging the crowd.

I've never heard an explanation of what is happening in the clip, so I posted the question on the CBC website.  I got the following response from a Canadian hockey fan:

Many people do think that the little excerpt from the opening of Coaches Corner is from the 'infamous' game 7 of the 1979 semi-finals between Boston and Montreal...but it isn't.

It was actually game 2 of the series.  The Bruins lost game 1, arguably due to penalties that Don felt were influenced by the Montreal Forum crowd.  Plus Don openly complained before game 2 on how Scotty Bowman mentioned to the media that the Bruins were getting away with murder.  Cherry also discovered that Bowman was at the rink in the morning (when the refs went for their morning skate) and Scotty told the refs that the Bruins were giving out cheap-shots.  When he found this out, Cherry said, "We are going to get screwed tonight."

So when game 2 did start, the Bruins got dinged with penalty after penalty on very questionable calls (after a Jean Ratelle 'slash'....that's right...Jean Ratelle), thus Don took a few 'bows' to show he was right in his prediction (i.e. I told you so), and the crowd responded.

So there you have it.  For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, this show appears on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) during the first intermission of Hockey Night in Canada, which usually appears each Saturday during the season.
